The ground is a mix of hazards.
The San Andreas Fault runs along the hills to the west, and the Hayward Fault sits across the bay; both put real seismic demand on structures citywide, with regional scenarios modelling a magnitude-7-plus event.
Much of the land north of Highway 101 is old bay mud and artificial fill, highly susceptible to liquefaction and amplified shaking, while the older residential flats sit on moderate-liquefaction soils.
